How We Measure Flex

The SANSNiKTM Flexibility Scale, from liquid body wash at F0 to a rigid bar at F10.

For over a century, the personal care industry has relied on rigorous metrics for almost everything inside a cleanser. Formulators measure pH down to the decimal point. Chemists calculate surfactant ratios, viscosity profiles, fragrance loads, and lather density. Operations and logistics teams track fluid ounces, cure weights, and months of shelf stability.

Yet nobody ever built a way to measure how a cleanser actually behaves in the human hand.

The reason for that omission is simple: until now, the physical states of personal care did not require a ruler. Every cleanser on the market existed at one of two mechanical extremes. It was either a pourable liquid kept in a plastic bottle, or a rock-hard solid pressed in a stamp mill. Neither state offered any dynamic interaction with the body. You poured one, and you gripped the other like a wet brick.

SANSNiKTM starts with touch. When we set out to engineer a solid cleanser that conforms to the human body, we quickly realized that conversational adjectives were useless on a production floor. Words like soft, bendy, pliable, and squishy cannot be written into a batch specification. They are not precise enough to guarantee that the bar you buy in October feels identical to the bar you buy in March.

To manufacture an entirely new physical category of personal care, a subjective feeling had to become an objective measurement. Because no standard existed for flexible solid cleansers, we had to build the ruler ourselves.

Soft is Not a Standard

Press a solid object against wet skin and a complex set of mechanical forces takes over. Making a cleanser bend is actually quite easy; any formulator can under-cure a bar or flood a base with solvents until it droops. Making a cleanser bend correctly, and repeat that exact behavior across thirty showers, is an engineering challenge.

Without a strict mechanical standard, a flexible bar fails in one of three ways:

  1. Structural Collapse. The core lacks tensile integrity. When gripped with wet hands, the bar folds in on itself, tears at the edges, or mushes into the drain grate.
  2. Plastic Deformation. The bar bends around a curve, stays bent, and warps into an awkward, curled shape that cannot sit flat on a shower ledge.
  3. Environmental Drift. The bar feels right at room temperature on day one, but turns to jelly after sitting in a steamy shower, or hardens into a stiff puck during a cold winter week.

True ergonomic comfort lives inside a very narrow mechanical window. The bar must resist your grip just enough to provide leverage, yield just enough to wrap the curves of your body, and recover its geometry the instant you release pressure. The SANSNiKTM Flexibility Scale (the F-Scale) is the proprietary framework we use to locate that window and lock our chemistry inside it.

The SANSNiKTM Flexibility Scale (F0 to F10)

The F-Scale is a 0-to-10 index that quantifies three distinct physical properties under the force of an average human hand: surface yield, longitudinal deflection, and elastic recovery.

Rather than measuring abstract laboratory thresholds in isolation, the scale is calibrated directly to human ergonomics. It measures how many Newtons of force are required for wet fingertips to indent the outer surface, how many degrees the 3.5-inch bar can arc across a joint without fracturing the surfactant matrix, and how many milliseconds it takes for the bar to snap back to a flat plane once pressure is removed.

  • F0 · Pure Liquid. Zero structural memory. Takes the shape of its container immediately. Traditional liquid body washes, shower gels, and cleansing oils.
  • F1 to F2 · Gelatinous. Unstructured hydro-gels and novelty shower jellies. High surface slip with near-zero internal tension. Collapses or shears apart under normal gripping force.
  • F3 to F4 · High Pliability. Deep deflection under light finger pressure. Designed for delicate contours and minimal-force application. Currently in development for a future release; not a product available for order today.
  • F5 · Balanced Flex. The foundational calibration of The Contour BarTM and The Contour BarTM With Grit. Engineered with enough internal tension to stand upright and hold a crisp rectangular geometry, paired with enough give to wrap smoothly around a shoulder, shin, or ankle under ordinary washing pressure.
  • F6 to F7 · Structured Flex. A firmer, high-resistance core paired with responsive, yielding edges for heavy-duty leverage. Currently in development for a future release; not a product available for order today.
  • F8 to F9 · Semi-Rigid. Minimal longitudinal deflection. Behaves like a solid block in the palm, offering only a slightly cushioned, non-brittle outer surface.
  • F10 · Rigid Solid. Zero deflection and zero elastic recovery. Under high force, the material cracks or shears rather than bending. Traditional triple-milled, cold-process, and extruded syndet bar soaps.

Why The Contour BarTM is Calibrated to F5

Before launching SANSNiKTM, we formulated and tested hundreds of iterations across every point on the scale. We tested F2 bars that felt intriguing dry, but slipped out of the hand like a wet fish once lather started. We tested F8 bars that held sharp geometric edges, but still bridged awkwardly over the shin and collarbone just like traditional soap.

F5 emerged as the exact mechanical sweet spot for daily full-body cleansing.

Resting on your shower ledge, an F5 bar looks and behaves like a clean, architectural solid. Measuring 3.5 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and a full 1.0 inch deep, it holds its footprint without slumping or puddling. The moment you pick it up and apply warm water, the F5 calibration goes to work across three distinct stages:

  • Micro-Yield for Grip. Traditional F10 bars act like wet ice cubes; because the surface cannot indent, water forms a hydroplane layer between the soap and your skin, sending the bar flying across the shower floor. At F5, the outer millimeter of the bar yields slightly under your thumb and fingers. Your grip settles into the bar, creating mechanical traction even when fully lathered.
  • Macro-Flex for Contours. The human body is a series of curves, hollows, and angles. A rigid bar only makes contact at a single tangent point, forcing you to scrub harder to cover surface area. Under ordinary washing pressure, the core of an F5 bar bends along its length, wrapping cleanly around a shoulder, calf, Achilles tendon, or ankle. More surface area makes contact with every pass.
  • Instant Elastic Memory. Flexibility without recovery is just mush. The hydrocolloid and surfactant matrix inside an F5 bar acts like a damped spring. The second you lift The Contour BarTM off your skin, internal tension pulls the bar right back into its flat, rectangular silhouette.

Both The Contour BarTM (Smooth) and The Contour BarTM With Grit are held to this exact F5 standard. Because suspended exfoliants naturally alter the density of a solid base, our manufacturing team adjusts the binding matrix of the Grit formula to offset the pumice load, ensuring both bars deliver the exact same F5 bend in your hand. Smooth is engineered as a daily body bar, not for the face. With Grit is built for below the neck, hands, and feet, and is not for the face.

Why an F5 Stays an F5

Defining the F5 standard on paper took weeks. Engineering a clean, skin-friendly, biodegradable formula that stays at F5 from the first shower to the last is the reason SANSNiKTM took two years to bring to market.

Anyone who has used a traditional F10 soap bar knows that its physical behavior degrades as it wears down. By week three, a standard bar shrinks into a thin, brittle sliver that snaps in half and loses all lathering leverage. Conversely, early attempts at soft soaps absorbed ambient shower water, swelling into a waterlogged sponge after a few days on the ledge.

Our proprietary US-made matrix locks the F5 calibration in place against water, heat, and physical wear:

  • Geometry-Independent Flex. We engineered the elastic modulus of the bar so its feel does not rely solely on its starting 1.0-inch thickness. Whether you are breaking the seal on a brand-new bar or using it on wash 30, the responsiveness and recovery remain remarkably consistent. Most people get 30+ full-body washes per bar.
  • Hydro-Stability. Water activates our surfactant system to build a rich, dense lather, but it does not penetrate and break the structural grid of the bar. Set it in a dry spot between showers, and the surface stays taut and firm.
  • Thermal Lock up to 170°F. Many flexible materials rely on waxes or low-melt polymers that soften in heat and stiffen in the cold. Our matrix is thermally locked up to 170°F. A freezing delivery truck in January, a 130°F freight container in July, or a hot morning shower will not move the calibration off F5.

A Ruler for What Comes Next

Establishing the SANSNiKTM Flexibility Scale was never just about launching a single product. It was about laying down the engineering language for our manufacturing floor. Every batch we cast under our own roof is tested against the F-Scale before it ever reaches a curing rack or a shipping box.

F5 is our foundational release because it solves the daily friction of the shower for the widest range of routines. In the future, this same ruler will allow us to explore other points on the spectrum, from a higher-pliability F3 form factor to a firmer, high-leverage F7 bar. Those calibrations are part of our long-term roadmap, not products you can order today. Right now, everything we build is focused on proving just how good F5 feels in your hand.
